GACHAGUA'S IMPEACHMENT
Kenya's Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, was impeached by the Senate on October 17, 2024, following several accusations, including inflammatory remarks that equated government positions to "shareholding," undermining judicial independence, and breaching the National Cohesion and Integration Act. The impeachment motion succeeded with 54 out of 66 senators voting to uphold the charges, particularly focusing on Gachagua's controversial statements and actions that many saw as divisive and unconstitutional.
The charges that sealed his fate included remarks that undermined the judiciary and attacks on the National Intelligence Service. Despite Gachagua's hospitalization and a court order temporarily halting the process, the Senate's decision remains upheld for now. His successor, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, has been approved by parliament but is awaiting official swearing-in pending court decisions on the legal suspension of the impeachment.
